The Radford University Student Government Association is the legislative arm of the student body. We serve the student population of Radford University to the utmost of our ability. As the largest student advocacy organization, we are involved with multiple campus legislative groups such as the Faculty Senate, the AP Staff Senate and the Board of Visitors. Serving the Radford community for 102 years, the Student Government Association has been an integral part of our institution. To learn more about SGA click here.
Something I love about SGA is the fact that it is a group of individuals from all backgrounds and all majors. This diversity allows for many voices to be heard but it also has given me the opportunity to recognize my own biases on issues and consider the opinions of others.
I served for two years as the SGA executive secretary . As executive secretary, I was in charge of making sure our meetings go accordingly. I am in charge of making sure every member is in attendance, as well as dressed appropriately.
As secretary, I was also in charge of formulating an agenda and keeping record of the meetings so they may be published on our website. This position required me to be very precise and organized. This position has also taught me a great deal about time management, everyone relies on me to keep things in order. During my time with SGA I received opportunities to advocate for higher education on behalf of my fellow students. We went to Richmond this year to advocate for higher education on behalf of Radford University.
One of the issues we discussed was financial aid for first generation college students. This is a prominent issue at Radford due to the fact that many of these students are forced to drop out due to the fact they can no longer afford to attend university. We feel that no student should miss out on an education due to financial reasons.
This experience taught me that when speaking to higher officials such as delegates and senators, it is very important to be precise and passionate about the topic being discussed. I have also been able to do a great deal of community service with SGA. I have helped facilitate career fairs, move in incoming freshmen and give them advice and direction on their first year of college conduct T-shirt drives and make and deliver care kits to survivors of sexual assault both at hospitals and at the Women's Resource Center.
