"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others" -Mahatma Gandhi
My professors have been the most inspirational and monumental influences in my life other than my family. I have had the amazing opportunity to learn from some of the most brilliant minds here at Radford University. I have been so inspired by hearing their stories and the challenges they have overcome to get to where they are today.
I am always encouraged by my professors to come and ask for help. As I mentioned on the previous page, they have made every effort to get to know me, but they have also made reminded me constantly that nothing is impossible. They have affirmed me and made me realize when I am undermining my accomplishments and my achievements. They have served me in many ways.
Dr. Paige Tan made it so obvious she believed in me from the first day I went to her office, she saw potential in me and made it obvious she wanted me to succeed. I have gone to her countless times for advice because she always provides excellent feedback and pushes me to work hard. A large part of why I am able to graduate on time is because of Dr. Paige Tan. She helped me develop and independent study on an international disaster and helped me find a supervisor for my research.
Dr. Tanya Corbin has also been monumental in my development as a student. I was actually introduced to her by one of my dear friends who looked at Dr. Corbin as a mother figure. My favorite interaction with Dr. Corbin was when she agreed to be the subject of my women's studies final project. The assignment was to interview a woman of a different generation and find out about their experiences. Through this process, we found that we were somewhat kindred spirits. Dr. Corbin also agreed to be my supervisor for my independent study. This is an extreme sacrifice because she is a domestic politician and is overseeing an internationally focused independent study. Dr. Corbin was also the one who encouraged me to apply for scholar-citizen initiative.
It is so inspiring to see that a leader does not have to fit a specific mold, all of these professors are so unique and it makes them so powerful and influential. I am so grateful for the monumental impact these professors have made in my academic life.
My professors have truly made me a better student and a better person and have given me a desire to mentor and help others as they have helped me.
