In the Future I plan to pursue a career in the United Nations as a foreign service officer because the mission of a person in foreign service is to promote peace, support prosperity, and protect American citizens while advancing the interests of the US abroad. I want to pursue this profession because it has always been in my nature to serve as a mediator and a peacemaker. I have always desired to learn about other nations and their culture in order to help the United States build a better relationship with other nations.
I chose to be a political scientist because of my desire to help people on a global level. This desire has been nurtured by my bi-cultural background and the traumas I have experienced in my life. Being a part of the US Foreign Policy concentration at Radford has increased my desire to go into foreign service. I have specifically developed a passion for human rights, specifically women's rights. Taking a women's studies class, a global issues class and a gender and warfare class has helped open my eyes to how stereotyping is so engrained in every society and does a great disservice to us as human beings. I want to help bring awareness and help to educate not only the US but other nations on the great benefits of empowering and educating women.
In order to increase my knowledge, I plan to attend graduate school to continue my international relations studies. I also plan to focus in human rights and I am grateful my time at Radford has shown me how passionate I am about the subject. Upon graduating and before attending graduate school, I plan to take a year off in order to gain some experience by working in a government agency. I am currently working with Dr. Angela Joyner and Dr. John Liptak to figure out what organizations would be best for me to work for in order to help me with my longterm goal of working with the UN.
