I was one of three student employees for the Radford University Department of Political Science. This position is so much more than a desk job, I am responsible for helping professors with many tasks such as facilitating exams, making flyers for events and helping students with any general questions they may have.
Although it is not clearly stated in my job description, I like to help students in any way I can. I have helped students map out what courses to take with teachers that would best nurture their learning style. I have also helped students write resumes and and pointed them in the direction of resources that will improve their professionalism.
My professors have taught me that it is important to take every opportunity to give to others in any way possible. They have done this for me and I desire to do this for others.
As a student employee I also helped with the department search for a new constitutional law professor. I was in charge of acquiring each applicant's credentials and making a folder for them via dropbox. This helped professors narrow down the choices and eventually a professor was chosen.
I helped prepare for the department's Political Science Day. Poli Sci Day is a two day event where students are able to come an listen to people discuss career fields they may want to go in one day. This event was designed to help Political Science students understand what resources they have on campus to improve their skills and also to help them see that there is a variety of different career fields for a political scientist.
I was in charge of creating the tickets for the event. The purpose of the ticket was to give students proof to give to their professors of attending the event. Students received a ticket for each event they attended. I was also in charge of making the flyers to introduce the speakers and their topics. Myself and my fellow student employees worked with Dr. Paige Tan and Ms. Laura Metz of the department to organize everything and prepare an informational table for the event.
I love that this is a job that allows me to be creative. I have also gotten the opportunity to make event flyers that have been shown all over campus and develop planning and organizational skills. I also love that I am able to work under my favorite professors and have a better view of what they do and why they do it.
